(OOC: Map of the Massachusettes Academy used from Marvel Wikia Massachusetts Academy Floorplan )

There were times when Even Emma needed to get away from it all. Of course when you were the head of a Multiconglomerant and the Headmistress of the Massachusetts Academy you didn’t get the chance to do that very often. There was always something that needed to be done and of course, paperwork to be gone over. Staring at the stack of paperwork that awaited her signature or perusal Emma sighed and swiveled her desk chair away from the desk and stretched. There was only so much paperwork she could stand to look at before she needed to stretch her legs. Rising from her chair she glanced out of one of the windows.

This was the perfect excuse to go to the library while giving herself some exercise. With that thought in mind, she quickly moved out of her office and closed the door gently behind her. The sound of her heels clicked against the floor as she made her way out of the administration building and strolled down the well-manicured path to the library. At this time of the day it was usually quiet although she could still pick up on the students as they worked on honing their skills or learning something important to their education. Still, Emma walked past without being overly worried. She made a mental note to check on some students having difficulty mastering some skill but for the most part she continued her walk undeterred from her plan.

As she passed the other buildings on her way to the library she heard voices growing louder. There were several students on break in the student lounge and they were quite content chatting with one another as she briefly passed them by. The smell coming from the Cafeteria reminded her that lunch was going to be ready soon but as tempting as the smells were coming from there Emma did not deviate from her purpose.

A few short steps brought her to the library where she glanced about with an elegant turn of her head. She was dressed in a white business suit that looked as fresh as when she had put it on that morning. Her golden curls caught the glow of the table lamps as she purused the stacks with curious ice blue eyes for something that would engage her mind for a bit that didn’t have to deal with business or school paperwork. The scent of orange oil filled her nose and she slowly walked back and forth glancing at titles to see if anything caught her eye.

kurt
A Stroll at the Academy
Kurt was not usually a person to look on the dark side of things. He believed that people who did bad things deserved forgiveness, and he believed in second chances. A lot of good could be done by a penitent person. God knew that Kurt’s own soul wasn’t as white as a lily. He also believed that sometimes dark deeds needed to be done for the greater good, though he did not believe in jumping to them as the first solution. If people could be saved, they should be saved, and no one was beyond hope.

All that being said, if there was a person who could test that belief, it was Emma Frost. Yes, he had witnessed more evil in this world than she had ever committed. People like Mister Sinister or even Von Doom had done things far worse than Ms. Frost ever had, and all in the name of their own egos. Emma, though, had always proven to have a vein of self-serving vanity that bordered on her being an incarnation of the Dead Sin itself.

They had never been friends. The first time they had met was while the X-Men was investigating the Hellfire Club (that name alone put another argument in the “Deadly Sin” column) under the heading of Sebastian Shaw. Ms. Frost had been the reigning White Queen of the time, and she had a particular pride when it came to her position. It was because of her that the door was opened, and it was because of the Hellfire Club that they got their first real look at the Dark Phoenix…

Kurt sighed deeply, trying to not dwell on the darkness of the past. More importantly, Jean wouldn’t want him to dwell, so he pushed on past the dark memories. Jean had been one of his first friends when he came to the Institute. She had deserved better than what she got…

Kurt got out of the car, and looked upon the sweeping campus in front of him. Walking from building to building, children and young adults spoke and laughed. At first glance, it looked to the same kind of environment that Xavier’s Institute offered. For all he knew, that was all it was. But that was what he was here to find out. Was this new school more than met the eye? The Professor seemed concerned, but Charles was never one to give up control easily. Another school out there meant another place where mutants could go. He might not have as big of an issue if it had a different Headmistress.

And that brought him back to the subject of Emma Frost. There were always layers with her, and it made him a touch uncomfortable. Why the Professor chose to send Kurt on this excursion, he had no idea. It was true that Kurt seemed to be more proficient than others when it came to mind control (with psychics, at least, choosing to forget the events of his 18th birthday) he was not exactly a bastion against it. Did Xavier expect him to start sneaking around after the sun went down? Kurt wasn’t above that, but only if he had reason to suspect anything.

He did not worry about his image inducer that day. In a school full of mutants, he would hardly need it. Locking up the car, Kurt became to walk the campus grounds. Emma would find him soon enough. With her abilities, he had no doubt that she had already sensed him arrive, and since he was not exactly looking forward to encountering her, the more time spent on campus before they met up, the better.

Emma set an alarm on her watch to let her know when she really should be heading back to the office. She just needed a break from all the paperwork and a chance to relax with a good book. The librarian she had on staff had procured her a cup of tea and she was happily ensconced on her own. The students seemed hard at work and many of them knew her reputation well enough to know that slacking in the library or horseplay was frowned upon.

Having a reputation as she did was good for keeping order. Even the most independent minded student wouldn’t challenge her directly. Many went to her with requests or desire to obtain certain items and while she never gave into trivial demands if it was something reasonable she often bartered so that both she and the student in question benefited from the exchange. If she was known for being manipulative she was also known for being fair. Bullying was not tolerated at the school under her watch. It was too easy to break a young mind at the height of their greatest potential and that was something Emma would never allow.

There were always bad apples in the bunch of course. People were human after all, but she used all the skills at her disposal to hone those lesser-appreciated emotions in a good way towards appropriate targets; Humans that had oppressed mutants. The hour of leisure she’d given herself seemed to go by quickly and once it was over she rose and checked out the book that she wished to finish. It was always a good idea to present a good example to students. As she made her way out of the library she caught the first tell tail signs of a visitor; Kurt Wagner had come to call on the Massachusetts Academy. Deciding to meet the young man in a polite fashion she smiled to herself and made her way to her office.

It didn’t take long to make sure that her paperwork was stored properly. There was nothing illegal that could be used against her here. The school was above board in everything it did. She made the servants aware that she would be having a guest join her then smiled slightly, her blue eyes sparkling as she waited.

Greetings, Mr. Wagner; welcome to the Massachusetts Academy. Please join me. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. I happen to have some time set aside for lunch and would be honored if you would be my guest. What would you prefer to have for lunch? Our cook is one of the most renown chefs in the state. Along with the polite request and query, came directions to her office. She’d know if he dawdled or tried to find a short cut.

Now was the time to see how honorable he would be. She’d been polite and cordial but his response would determine how the meeting went from here on out. She could understand Xavier not coming himself although it was a disappointment; still, Mr. Wagner was far more charming than many of his fellow X-Men. It wouldn’t sway her one way or the other but it meant that there was a chance for a cordial meeting.

A Stroll at the Academy
Kurt felt the press in his mind a half second before he heard the words ringing in them. His gaze slowed slightly as he listened, knowing that no one else could hear the words that flowed through his mind. He knew this kind of communication. It was the quickest way for psychics to get in contact with people. Many of them “knocked” first unless it was an emergency. Emma, it seemed, did not really linger on the formalities. There was an etiquette that Kurt knew she would think herself beyond. He didn’t like it, but he wasn’t in any place to say anything at the moment.

He did not know Emma well enough to detect if there was any sort of threat in her tone, but he opted to play it cautiously anyway. He sent thoughts of acceptance of the offer and cordial agreement, while also giving the impression that he had no idea what to order for lunch. He knew he could never hope to send full thoughts in her direction, even if she could pluck them from his mind without effort. He did not have the same kind of relationship with Emma as the one he had with, say, the original members of Excalibur. Even today, even with Rachel Summers missing, he was certain he could reach down that bond, and find anyone of them. Kitty or even Brian… or Meggan…

He silently walked through the sidewalks of the campus, keeping to the route provided by Emma. He took note of things, causally, in the same way he might if he were, say, a parent on an open house with their student child, seeking out prospective schools. In the back of mind, though, he made sure to notice what parts of the campus that the route helped him avoid. If anything was being hidden, it would probably be in the places that Emma was keeping him away from.

The administrative building, and home of the office he was looking for, was opulent, and was enough to give him pause as he approached. It was large, and while much of the campus was new, the architecture had been designed to give it that old academia feeling. He supposed there could be an appreciation for the classics, and he had no right really to comment for or against such extravagance. After all, he, himself, lived in a mansion. Then again, he shared that mansion with a few hundred other people, living more of the dorm life even as an adult.

He followed the last clutch of directions to the office of Headmistress Emma Frost. There was a place for a secretary, but either she did not have one or they were off to lunch. She had mentioned she was settling in for the midday meal herself. He took one last moment to sort himself, still really not know what he would find (or what the Professor expected him to find) on this trip. Like a man with proper manners, he knocked.

Once she gained his acceptance to the meal she smiled. His lack of knowing what he wanted to eat was to be expected and leaned back in her black leather chair in contemplation, her legs crossed elegantly as she mused over what she could tell Mr Wagner. It was good to get the drop on one of Xavier’s prize pupils. While he was no longer a student, Kurt had gained respect with his actions and his ability to be cordial with almost everyone he met. It was a pity they did not have him working here. He wouldn’t be expected to use an image inducer to navigate the world, he’d be accepted in his true form.

Focusing her thoughts she sent to him, If you will permit? I recommend the vegetarian gluten free option if you are undecided. Do you have any food allergies that my staff need to be aware of?

Emma really didn’t care what he wanted but she needed to tell the servants wish dish to serve and it seemed the most prudent. They didn’t use peanuts and the gluten free food was cooked with separate dishes entirely and had its own clean surfaces and dishwasher to prevent cross contamination. As much as she wanted to get the drop on the X-men the last thing that she needed to deal with was one of them dropping dead under her watch. The key to good negotiations was in knowing when to use diplomacy and when to attack.

Hearing the knock at her office she shifted herself to a proper posture and sat up straighter. It was an ingrained habit from being headmistress, “Enter.” She said in a clipped British tone. She rose to greet Kurt a smile on her face and a gleam of curiosity in her eyes. As usual she was in a white pants suit that was flattering yet sophisticated. Her golden curls were artfully styled as she moved from behind her desk and offered her hand to Kurt to shake, a delicate rolex watch her only concession to jewelry of any type. “Please walk with me. The staff will be getting lunch ready presently in the staff-dining hall. After lunch it would be my pleasure to give you a tour of the school.” She said in the cordial tone she used with all the parents that wandered into the Massachusetts Academy.

As she spoke she mentally conveyed the food orders to her staff so that it would be ready when they arrived. “As you have already seen this school caters to students in much the same way that Xavier’s does.” She began to move him out the door and into a more open area. “These students are much like your own, lost, many unwanted and abandoned and just looking for the chance to prove their value to a world that all too often despises them for something beyond their control.” Her hands moved as she spoke, gesturing here and there to punctuate a point she was trying to make.

Staff moved about the hall, busy as usual during this time of day. Many greeted her with a polite nod as she passed. Everyone had lunch in shifts and many teachers passed them as they chatted about mundane subjects like any other school. While some of the instructors might look different from standard humans they still did the same things with their day that everyone else did. Talks about certifications, conferences that were coming up and the dreaded testing that had to happen swirled about as Emma moved with a quiet grace.

kurt
A Stroll at the Academy
Kurt took in the room that he came into, as well as the woman who occupied it. She was dressed modestly compared to the last time they met, but then again the last time they had met she was in little more than a corset and a thong. She was also wielding a riding crop at the time, so this was certainly a different path for their encounter to go. Granted, it had been ages ago, back when he was still a teenager, and, admittedly, a bit of a wise guy. She had defeated him in a fight, but ultimately the X-Men had won against her, and the rest of the Hellfire Club. That seems like a long time ago, especially when he compared the woman in front of him to the woman of back then.

Her office, too, reflected it. It was elegant, but subdued, a sharp contrast from the infernal abode he last saw her in. If there was any evil here, it was less obvious, which almost made him feel more concerned. Outright evil was easy to combat, but subtle, insidious wrong doing was harder to weed out.

He shook her hand with his own, only slightly aware of how it must look and feel without him image inducer. His large hands with only three digits gently engulfed her own soft one, the dark blue velvet a contrast to the pale skin of Ms. Frost’s Guten Tag, Frau Schulleiterin Frost. You prefer ‚Headmistress,‘ ja?“ He said pleasantly, his native language always more comfortable with him when it came to etiquette. und danke. For hosting me. He smiled to her. He was told that he was a handsome man, if anyone could look past his color, fur, eyes, ears, tail, and otherwise demonic anatomy. He did not know if she was one to judge…

“You’re recommendation for lunch sounds perfect. I am afraid I did not eat much before leaving the Institute, so anything would be delightful.” He also was told he had a certain charm about him, though he rarely saw it. He found it best to be himself, if today he was going to be more inquisitive. He could feel the mental shields tighten around him, and knew that Xavier was only trying to help from a distance the only way he knew how.

He indicated that Emma should lead the way when she suggested that they walk together. He followed a half step behind her and a full arm’s reach away, keeping that distance polite. His tail swished behind him, picked up so that it just brushed above the surface of the ground. He wondered how much people without tails thought about tail etiquette and language…

He also wondered if her words were chosen carefully to appeal to him. It was obvious to anyone that he was not one of those mutants that could blend with society. He was actively attacked by a mob with pitchforks one time. “I can see that you have thought how to accommodate for many students. And the ones with special needs as well?” It was clear that this would be a special interest to him, so he didn’t even try to hide it. “Of course, you know I am here to represent Xavier’s Institute? We were curious about any needs you might have that you are not capable of providing.” To Kurt, it would always be about placing the children first.

No one could accuse Kurt Wagner of not having manners. He’d grown into what appeared to be a thoughtful gentleman who made certain to be aware of his surroundings. This meeting was indeed much different from the last but Emma was still distrustful of Kurt’s true intentions in her school. Soon enough she’d find out but it wouldn’t be through the direct route. She’d have to be subtle in finding out what he really wanted. She wouldn’t underestimate him because of his charm although she had to grant she preferred his manner to Wolverine's.

She gripped his hand in a firm shake and smiled with an elegant shrug of her shoulders, “Headmistress will do. And you are most welcome, Mr. Wagner. No one here will judge you unless it is on your own merits and the content of your character.” She winked at him playfully but there was sincerity in her tone as she continued her thought, “Too often students have to hide themselves from the outside world. Here, they can relax knowing this is a safe environment for them.” She hated the fact that society judged a mutant by how they looked or what they could do. There was no need for such things at her school.

“We have indeed thought of those with special needs. We have desks that can accommodate many different needs as well as seating should it be needed. In cases where a mutant needs further accommodation we have note takers, audio recordings of lectures and extended test times. Many of our students now carry their textbooks on lightweight tablets, designed with their needs in mind that they can use to send homework directly to a teacher’s drop box should they need to. We have assistive technology built into every computer in every classroom so that there is no separation between the students. Tutors are on hand on an as needed basis and we provide therapists to help them deal with any trauma from their life prior to coming here. Occasionally, we have to get creative with meeting a students needs but I have some of the most creative IT minds on staff should we need to find an as of yet unheard of work around.”

Emma did not have to dissemble or play up her assistive technology program. She was quite proud of it in fact. She wanted no barriers to learning for her students. They’d been denied enough from society as it was. She would give them the best life chance she could. Granted, she had her own agenda but even Charles had that although he might deny it. They each saw the world in their own way and it shaped their students as a result.

She cocked her head to his offer of assistance, her blonde hair catching the light as she did so, “I had assumed that was why you were here, Mr. Wagner. You’re too cheerful to be out of a teaching job.” She teased him lightly before growing thoughtful, “I cannot think of anything we don’t already supply but in a show of good will to Xavier I will offer information on Assistive technology, if he is willing to do the same. It always helps to have another viewpoint -- mutations are on the rise and we must be ready to make sure that education keeps up with this trend.”

Students moved out of the way as she walked into the staff lunchroom, “I had the staff prepare a mild vegetarian curry for you. I hope it meets with your approval. If it is not to your taste I am sure we can find something else.” She gestured to a table with an elegant table cloth, crystal stem wear and china along with utensils. There was even seating to accommodate his tail and cutlery that was designed for those whose hands might be different. Gesturing she sat gracefully and once both of them were seated the staff presented their meals. Emma was fond of the curry herself and was happy to avail herself of the delightful dish. With luck this tour would end well and she could send Charles minion back with a stellar report. "Please let me know if there is anything I may have overlooked. You might see things that I take for granted."

Kurt had to admit, on the outside, Emma's Academy was a model facility. He took everything in quietly, allowing her to lead him around the campus. Her speech could have been one that had been rehearsed a hundred times before, more than likely to prospective students and their families. He would not have doubted if the very route that they took was the same. They hit every keynote, every impressive structure, every common area teeming with well developed children, socializing and healthy.

Much of what Emma said touched at his heart. When he had come to the Institute, there had been few students with special physical needs outside of the obvious: reinforced walls, or bedrooms that could sustain nightmares. Certainly, Hank had come before him, but even Xavier admired that providing for someone with Kurt anatomy had been a challenge. It was before the time of the Shi'ar, back when Kurt was just a part of the Second Class. He had been more than happy to help, though, knowing that future students would be better provided for, and if it meant that they had an empathetic ear to listen when they needed one.

But, then, Kurt wondered if Emma's motivations were not entirely pure. He knew the loyalty that he felt towards the Professor and his teammates; the ones who accepted him when even his own family had rejected him. He wondered what would happen if that same kind of loyalty was reflected back on someone who would use it for nefarious reasons.

When she asked about them combining technology, it caused a curious part of his mind to perk. Granted, he had offered resources to her and the Academy, but it was no secret how secret they had to keep their technology. “I am afraid the technology that we use in our facilities is either matched by what you have or not our information to give. The Shi'ar entrusted us with their secrets, and I am afraid that the agreement does not extend beyond the Professor.” And Forge and Hank, but that was only because they were the hands on specialists.

“But, it seems as if you have been very thoughtful when it comes to students with particular needs. I am sure I do not need to tell you how much of a personal relief that is to someone like me.” He genuinely smiled, even if a part of him was in conflict. Had Emma truly turned over a new leaf? If she had, this was a wonderful development, but if she hadn't... all of these children could very well be pawns in the White Queen's game.

He just needed evidence, in either direction, to be certain. His eyes would remain peeled.

Emma half expected the refusal she got so there was no surprise in her features or even anger. She merely nodded her acquiescence. “I understand. That is an admirable stance to take.” She said quietly as she listened to him. She was proud of the work she had done with her school and the fact that students had the chance to be something more than they had been.

She continued to eat lunch in a thoughtful and restrained manner. His next statement causes her to nod her head quietly, swallowing delicately, she paused and smiled politely, “That is high praise and I appreciate it.” Emma wanted to stay on Kurt’s good side during his visit here. She knew better than to expect him to join her side of things. His visit was unexpected, and it made her leery of him even if she couldn’t show it.

I hope your visit here has convinced you that we have the well-being of the students as paramount to our mission of education for mutants.” The fact that the Club had its own agenda with the students was something that she neglected to mention. In her mind Xavier was just as guilty of manipulating students with his own agenda. He wanted to use them to make the world a better place in his image. Had he truly been altruistic he would have let them grow up and lead normal lives.

Emma knew Xavier wanted to show the world that mutants could be trusted but to her it seemed like begging. Mutants were better than that. They shouldn’t have to grovel to gain respect. They were better than that. They deserved to be treated better than dogs begging for affection and acceptance. Mutants were better than normal humans and there was no need for them to stoop to accepting the scraps of life given to them by their lessers. Humans needed to learn the errors of their ways and it was time for mutants to show them.

None of this reflected in her face or posture; however, she smiled politely if a bit distantly at him and enjoyed her meal. “Did you wish to spend the rest of the day exploring the school? You’re certainly welcome to do so. The Four H club has a vegetable garden that is very impressive. They also help maintain the grounds from time to time as their classes require.” she asked him quietly as staff wandered in and out of the room, eating lunch and then leaving when they are done. A few people nod respectfully but none of them engage the pair. Kurt was just a normal man, eating lunch with the headmistress. Casual conversation swirls around them, with the occasional clink of silverware as if this was just another private school.

Emma wondered if Kurt would immeadiately run back to Xavier to confide what he’d seen. She didn’t think he was doing this out of the kindness of his heart. He might think he was but he was being manipulated by Xavier to see the worst in the school. Their glasses are never empty for long. A member of wait staff makes certain that their needs are met just as anyone else in the room. The staff appears just as friendly with the wait staff as if they were friends, clearly there was no class snobbery going on.
